💧 Restoring Rural Water Access: ECHO’s Commitment to Clean Water and Climate Action
In support of Zambia’s national drive to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 13—Clean Water & Sanitation and Climate Action—ECHO is leading a transformative effort to restore critical water infrastructure in rural communities.
Since 2020, in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, local authorities, and key stakeholders, ECHO has rehabilitated non-functional boreholes across 16 districts in Central and Western Provinces, bringing safe, sustainable water to over 396,000 people.
🚀 Impact at Scale
Thanks to generous support from CO2balance, Village Water UK, and Just a Drop, ECHO has:
Rehabilitated 853 boreholes in Central Province
Restored 520 boreholes in Western Province
Upgrading sites with durable UPVC piping under the #StopTheRot campaign
These upgrades ensure long-lasting infrastructure that can withstand environmental stress and serve communities reliably for years to come.
Analogue water meters track usage and inform planning
This proactive approach ensures uninterrupted access to clean water and builds community resilience.
🌍 Climate-Smart Solutions
By reducing the need to boil water with firewood—a common but carbon-intensive purification method—ECHO’s work helps lower emissions and protect Zambia’s ecosystems. Every rehabilitated borehole is a step toward climate mitigation, public health improvement, and environmental stewardship.
ECHO’s water rehabilitation program is more than infrastructure—it’s a lifeline. By combining innovation, accountability, and community engagement, we’re helping Zambia build a future where clean water flows freely, and climate goals are within reach.
